Buried Not Broken

By Christine Wattie

A return story. Not a survival story.

So many of the women I work with describe the same thing. They held it together. They kept going. They were there for everyone who needed them — and somewhere along the way, they quietly disappeared from their own life. They weren't broken. They were buried.

This book is for them. It's also, in many ways, for me.

What Buried Not Broken Is About

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from spending years being strong for everyone else. Women who have navigated relationship crisis, identity loss, grief, or quiet disconnection from themselves often tell me the same thing: they survived it, but they're not sure they came back.

Buried Not Broken is about the difference between surviving and returning. It draws on over twenty years of working with women in the hardest moments of their lives, and on Christine's own experience of what it took to come home to herself after years of building something with someone else — while quietly losing track of who she was in the process.

This is not a book about fixing what's broken. It's about finding what was never broken to begin with, and learning to live from there.

The book explores:

  • Why resilience is often misunderstood — and what genuine recovery actually looks like
  • The identity questions that surface in midlife for women who have lived for others
  • How relationship crisis, loss, and quiet disconnection can become unexpected doorways
  • What it means to rebuild your sense of self not from scratch, but from truth
  • The inside-out shift that changes everything — and why it can't be forced or rushed
